How the AP Lang Exam Is Scored

The AP English Language & Composition exam consists of two main sections: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) and Free Response Questions (FRQ). The College Board assigns specific weights to each section when calculating your final composite score.

  • Multiple Choice (MCQ): 45 questions, worth 45% of your total score.
  • Free Response (FRQ): 3 essays (Synthesis, Rhetorical Analysis, Argument), worth 55% of your total score.

Your raw scores from both sections are combined into a composite score, which is then converted to the 1-5 AP scale using a statistical process called equating. This ensures fairness across different exam versions.
